The Confluences Museum
Proud heir of 5 centuries of history, the Musée des Confluences in Lyon today houses 3.5 million objects and specimens from the natural sciences, humanities, as well as science and technology. It is located at the junction, or “confluence,” of the Rhône and Saône rivers, where this fabulous museum stands. Its impressive architecture is the work of the Austrian architectural firm Coop Himmelb(l)au. From the outside, the museum changes appearance depending on your viewing angle. Bathed in light, its majestic hall, the Crystal, opens onto the city, a real invitation to discovery! In 2011, the museum was awarded the title of Musée de France by the Ministry of Culture and Communication. It welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
The permanent exhibit narrates the great story of humanity through four distinct exhibitions over more than 3,000 m²: Natural Sciences Here, you will discover impressive collections: of insects (2 million visible specimens), Egyptology (about 4,900 objects), paleontology (160,000 lots mostly from French sites), shells (numbering 560,000), vertebrates (taxidermy, skeletons…), invertebrates (sponges, corals, crustaceans, arachnids…), minerals (22,000 lots)… Human Sciences Oceania, the Americas, Africa, the Arctic Circle, and European Prehistory are represented. You will have the chance to discover rare and ancient items. Temporary exhibitions also enhance your visit to the Musée des Confluences in Lyon on a variety of themes.
